Basic Stair Building Designs

By Greg Vanden Berge 3/14/2008

Basic stair building starts with basic stair designs. The simplest stair design is the classic straight set of stairs know simply as the straight run. The straight run set of stairs can be one step or one thousand steps long. These stairs are in front of your house, going down to your basement and in your office buildings.

The straight run set of stairs is the most common set of stairs ever built. You can do so much to the stair design and layout of a straight set of stairs.

The stair handrails can go up a few steps or the whole length of the staircase. You can use carpeting or hardwood for your steps. Basic stair building designs also come in other shapes as well so let's go to the next one.

The next stair design is also very common. This is the L shaped set of stairs which goes up about 6 steps to a landing and then continues up the rest of the way to the upper floor. L shaped stairs can have handrailing go up to the landing and stop or the rest of the way up to an upper handrail at the top floor.

The next basic stair building design is the bracket stairs. These stairs usually have a large piece of wood for a stair stringer. The stair treads lag screws into a metal stair bracket and then into the stringer. These stairs fall into the basic stair building design because of the ease of construction. You will see a lot of bracket stairs outdoors and in apartments.

Basic stair design and building starts with a plan. Figure out what type of stairs will work best for your house or building. Make sure the rise and run will  work correctly. This is one of the biggest problems I have faced over the years building stairs. Another important tip is building the stairs to code and for safety.

Happy building.
