Escutcheon - Handrailing Decoration

A escutcheon is a decorative or ornamental plate, that can be used to cover a handrail, baluster or other stair parts. Plumbers use them to cover pipes coming out of walls or cabinets.

Escutcheons come in a variety of sizes and shapes, but sometimes are difficult to find at your local home improvement centers or lumber yards. Most of the time, they're used to cover up, some type of stairway hand railing connection.

For example: If you had a metal handrail, like the picture above, that was going to connect to an interior wall, you would use an escutcheon to cover the wall handrail bracket connector.

They can also be used at the base of the baluster or spindle.
