Exterior is often a word used to refer to the outside of your house. A exterior set up stairs would be located on the outside, an interior set of stairs would be located on the inside.

The stairs located on the inside of a building probably aren't going to be affected by snow, ice, wind, rain, dirt, moisture or extreme climate conditions. Extreme daily temperature changes, from hot to cold can wreak havoc on wood stairways.

I've seen plenty of stairways constructed out of wood and metal, suffering from water damage, termites and corrosion. 90% of the time, these problems could have been avoided, by an experienced designer or stair builder.
