Glass - Stair Design And Building

Glass is a hard, durable material used in windows, windshields and storage jars. Glass can actually be used for stairway handrails, steps and risers. A good example of this would be the picture below.

I've never built a glass stairway, nor do I ever plan on building one in the future. I'm going to leave this part of the building process to someone else. I'm going remain using wood and metal to build my staircases.

Even though a glass stairway looks great and provides us with a wonderful piece of architecture, I don't really know how safe they would actually be, to walk up and down on a daily basis. The top of a glass stair tread would need to have a rough texture or surface, to prevent someone from slipping and falling down the stairway.

Could you imagine moving a large piece of furniture up a stairway with a glass handrail? What about a kid throwing a baseball or even a hammer at the glass?

Like I said, some architectural stairways, look like a piece of art, when they're completed and provide us with something wonderful to look at, but are they practical.
