Run - Stair Building

The stairway run is the horizontal distance between the front of the bottom stair tread and the front of the top stair tread. The picture below provides you with an excellent illustration of the run. If you added each one of the individual measurements of the stair treads together, you would come up with the total run.

The Designer Is Calling For A 130 Inch Stair Run, But There's Not Enough Room

This isn't uncommon and don't forget that people make mistakes, including architects and designers. Simply contact the architect or designer to provide you with a correction.

Why Shouldn't I Make Run Adjustments On My Own, Instead Of Waiting For An Architects Response?

Today's world is filled with lawyers and insurance companies whose main concern is to avoid paying out any money, if possible. As a framing contractor, I rarely deviate from the plans in front of me, just in case there's a problem in the future.

I might sound like I'm overly paranoid, but I have good reasons to be. I've seen enough people either put out of business or spending lots of money, because of one simple mistake that wasn't even their fault.

The minute you choose to change anything on the plans, you're taking responsibility for the change. Architects and engineers understand this better than anyone and would love to have a contractor make all of the corrections needed to complete the project, without ever contacting them.

This will reduce an architect or engineer's liability, simply by passing it on to the person who made the changes. Trust me, when the shit hits the fan, you don't want to be the one standing there in the middle of the sharks.

If you're a stair builders, you're just the person assembling the components necessary to complete the project and that's where you want to end your liability. If you add or subtract an additional step on a stairway and it creates a safety issue or violates a specific building code, guess who's going to be involved in the lawsuit, if someone ever gets injured.

Think about what I just said, especially if you're contractor just starting out in the business. Your main goal is to stay in business and you won't be in business long, if you get involved in a long legal battle.
