Single Stinger Stairway - Design And Building

A single stringer stairway is a set of stairs that only uses one stringer. This stringer can be positioned in the center or at one side of the stairs. The illustration below provide you with a general idea of what a single stringer stairway would look like, if the stringer was located in the middle of the staircase.

Would A Single Stringer Stairway Cost More Than A Conventional Three Stringer Set Of Stairs?

It all depends upon the design and materials used for each one of the stairs. If you were going to build a stairway that was 1 inch tall made out of solid gold, it would probably cost more than the same one, made out of wood.

I believe a better question would be, would a single stringer stairway be cheaper to build if they were made out of the same materials? The answer to this question would probably be yes.

Single stringer stairs are difficult to build and are going to require someone with more experience to actually build and install them correctly. The individual stringer usually needs to be stronger if it's located in the center than it would be if it was located on either side of the stairs.
