Minimum Stair Clearance

 
 

 

 

The building code minimum stair clearance for headroom is 6 feet 8 inches in most states. If you do have a minimum of 6'8" you could develop the problem with any person that is over a six-foot tall and leans forward walking down the stairs.  These people could quite possibly hit their head on the stairwell head out.  I am six-foot 3 inches and have built many of stairs and ran into this problem frequently even though the minimum headroom clearance is 6'8"according to the building code, I would have a problem living in these homes built with cramped conditions.

 

Over the years I have found that most architects Building in tight quarters and narrow building lots seem to have limited space for the stairway design.  This will require most contractors to have the foresight and experience to solve these problems before it is too late.  These are difficult problems to foresee before you start building the house were dwelling
