Stair Riser

The stair riser in this picture is the individual pieces of plywood that the arrows pointing to these are the parts of the stairs that covered the vertical distance between each step as you climb the stairs. The riser also adds additional support to the front of the stair tread, if the riser wasn't there and used and between the stair stringers you would be able to feel a flex in the stair tread.

The stair riser can be made out of half-inch plywood, 5/8 plywood or 3/4" plywood. If you're building an outdoor set of stairs you might choose to use a 1 x 8 or 2 x 8 depending on your stair design.

Tip if you're building a exterior stairway out of a material like redwood or cedar you may choose to use this material for your stair stringers, stair riser's, stair treads and hand rail system.
