Replacing Old Stairs
By Greg Vanden Berge
The first thing we need to do when replacing old stairs or doing any
type of remodeling and renovation is to remove the old stairway. If the
stairway is in pretty good shape and you can take it apart in pieces, do
it.
Only use this method, if you're planning on replacing the stairway with
similar materials and using the same type of stairway construction
method. This could work to your advantage, because some of the
demolitioned stair parts could be reused or used as templates.
For example, if you're going to rebuild the same stairway, you could use
the parts you removed as patterns for the new parts that you're going to
be replacing.
Depending upon which type of stairway you have in your building, you
could actually use the stair treads, risers and stringers as patterns
for your new stairway. Simply remove the old stair stringers and use
them as a pattern to trace your new stringers.
You can also do the same thing with your stair treads, risers and other
parts. This method isn't going to work on every type of stairway, but if
you can apply it to your next remodeling or renovation project for
replacing old stairs, it could save you a lot of time.
