Stairway Lighting Creates Safety Problems
By Greg Vanden Berge
There are quite a few homes that have bad stairway
lighting or no stairway lighting.
Most homes built before the 1960s don't even have stair lighting and
these homes can create safety problems for anyone using the stairway,
once it becomes dark.
If this stairway is perfectly Straight and there is plenty of light and
the people using the stairs are cautious and careful every single time
that they walk up and down the stairway, there's a good chance that you
won't ever have an accident, while using the staircase.
Now let's think about this for a moment, if everyone is conscious of
their safety, we probably wouldn't have any accidents, but that's not
the case, is it. People carry heavy bulky items up and down the
stairways and usually aren't concerned about falling, because they
haven't ever got hurt walking up and down the stairs before.
Even if we remove the large bulky items, unsafe handrails, poor stair
construction, slippery stairways, stair design problems and don't
include these in our list of problems with stairways, we could still
have problems from people running up and down the stairs, turning
around, not thinking, or anything else that you could possibly think of
that would cause an accident or safety issue with a set of stairs, once
we remove the stairway lighting, we only add to the problems.
Imagine being in a hurry running down a poorly designed stairway that’s
slippery and then imagine running down the same stairway during the
middle of the night without proper lighting. It doesn't take a rocket
scientist to figure out that you're only adding to the problem, by not
having sufficient stairway lighting.
You don't need to fall down a set of stairs in the dark, to realize that
stairway lighting is very important and if you're building a home, make
sure that you have sufficient lighting in your new staircase.
