Winder Problems With Egress And Exits

I'm going to do my best with this one to clarify its understanding, but suggest that you contact your local building department, if you're going to use winders as an egress or exit from any building, because this one might be difficult to make sense out of.

Reference: 2012 International Building Code - 1009.7.3 page 254

Winders are not permitted as a means of egress for the most part, yet could be allowed in residential dwellings or homes.

I think it could be safe to say that stair winder type designs can be used for single family dwellings as a means of egress, but shouldn't be used in buildings with occupancy over 50.

Attention: Don't forget to check with your local building department to verify any building codes on this website. This information could be incorrect or outdated. Building codes are updated regularly and to some building departments have different interpretations for certain building codes.
