Cap - Home Building Materials

A cap usually refers to something that goes on top of something else. You wear a baseball cap on top of your head and use a bottle opener to remove the cap from the top of the bottle.

When building a stairway handrail system, a cap can refer to two different objects.

1. A cap can be a piece of finish building material that runs at an angle, vertical or horizontal. Most solid drywall guard rail
s will use a 1 x 6 to finish the top of the wall off.

2. A cap can also be a decorative object that would be placed on top of a post or other parts of the stairway and handrail.

3. Base caps are use for bottom balsuters to connect to the stairway and come in all shapes and sizes.

It's hard to imagine, but a few 10 dollar post caps can take an ordinary stairway and turn it into something extraordinary. If you're planning on building a fence, staircase or decorative handrail, go down to your local lumber yard and see if they have any caps that you can use for your project.
