Chalk Line - Stairway Construction Tools
A chalk line is a mark created by rubbing a colored chalk onto a string and then pulling it tight over the area you wish to make a Straight line. After you have created a tight line, you simply pull up on the string and let it go. The moment it hits the object or surface area, you should have a nice Straight line that you can use.

Chalk lines create Straight lines that can be used
when laying out walls for framing or marking wood that needs to be cut.
The picture above shows a red chalk line that was snapped onto a piece
of oriented strand board.
When building stairs, you can use your Straight chalk lines to cut your
plywood treads and risers. The most popular chalk used today is blue and
red, but they also come in a variety of different colors.
