Cripple Wall - Home Building And Wood Framing
A cripple wall is just another word for a small wall. In the construction industry there are plenty of words that refer to plenty of things and this is just another one of them.
My father often referred to a small wall as a cripple
wall. He would also use the word cripples, when he was referring to
smaller wall framing studs.
In the picture above there is a small cripple wall that's going to be
holding up the stair landing and stringers. Cripple studs can also be
used to fill in or create walls underneath stair stringers.
Maybe the word cripple came from the fact that most carpenters were
tired or felt crippled after working all day long. There were plenty of
days when I drove home from work, completely exhausted.
