Flight Of Stairs - Stair Building

A flight of stairs would be any stairway that takes you from one floor to the next. You could also refer to a flight of stairs as any stairway that is broken up by a landing. The picture below provides you with a good example of one flight of stairs.

However, you can also view the lower section of this particular flight of stairs as a individual flight of stairs. The upper section of the stairway would be considered the second flight of stairs.

Confused yet, don't worry about it. If someone you're working with, refers to a flight of stairs, just ask them to clarify their statement. Like I said, a carpenter working in Minnesota might refer to a flight of stairs in a different way, than a carpenter working in Texas.

I don't have time to tell you the whole story, but about 20 years ago someone hired me to build a flight of stairs and provided me with a price that we both agreed upon. It was a pretty good price and when I finished, I made about $40 an hour.

When I told the construction foreman about my success and that I had completed the stairway, he looked puzzled. You're not done yet, you need to finish the rest of the flight of stairs.

Now I was the one who looked puzzled, I'm done, I've already completed your flight of stairs. That's when he took me over to another section of the project, next to the stairway I had just completed and provided me with an excellent view of the remaining section of his interpretation of a flight of stairs.

This misunderstanding was a lesson learned and still remains in the back of my mind. That's actually one of the reasons why I'm building this glossary of stairway terms.

Make sure that you clarify and understand everything about your construction projects, especially if you're working for someone else.
