Half Round Tread - Stairs
A half round stair tread usually protrudes from the bottom of the stairway. The picture below provides you with an excellent example of a half round tread that has been covered by carpet and provides the home builder with an inexpensive architectural detail.
These stair treads can also be finished in a variety
of different woods, adding a rich look to the stairway. Architects have
been using details like these for years, to enhance the bottom of a
stairway.
Stair Framing Tip: As a stair builder, I installed plenty of them, only
to find out later that the finish carpenter needed to remove them. It
wouldn't be a bad idea to check with the finish carpenter for more
information, before you even think about building your half round tread.
Home builders use tricks like these and have been using tricks like them
for years. It's relatively inexpensive to create a half rounded tread,
that's going to be finished with carpeting. However, building something
like this out of hardwood could be expensive.
