Handrail Netting - Stairway Safety
Handrail netting would be any materials used to create an additional barrier for your handrails or guard rails. If you have small children or small animals and you live in a two-story home, it wouldn't be a bad idea to purchase a handrail netting, to provide additional protection for everyone in the family.
How Would You Know, Whether You Need a Handrail Netting or Not?
If you have any pets or small children that fit in between your handrail balusters or spindles, you probably need a handrail netting. They're relatively inexpensive and you would probably kick yourself in the behind, if your baby or small pet, ever fell and injured themselves.
What About Protecting Other Family Members?
This might sound strange, but I was actually walking down stairs one
day, in one of the homes that I was working on. I wasn't really paying
attention, until I noticed a small object flying across the room.
One of the homeowner's children had just threw a small wooden block
through the handrail. He was in the process of throwing the rest of them
through the handrail balusters, before his mother told him to stop.
There's two dangers in a situation like this. A small child could fall
through a handrailing system, especially one with extra wide baluster
spacing or something could get thrown, kicked or push through the
handrail, injuring someone below.
If you have small children or pets, you should at least think about
purchasing some type of handrail netting or creating one on your own.
