Horses - Stair Stringer Construction
A stair horse is just another name that construction workers use, when referring to a stair stringer. The picture below provides you with an excellent example of what a stair stringer, carriage or horse looks like.
Stair stringers (horses) are the backbone or
structural supports of most stairways. They're also one of the most
difficult items to create for most carpenters who work in the home
building industry.
When I first started working in 1978, there was only a handful of
carpenters who knew how to build a set of stairs. It wasn't long, before
I was one of these individuals and reaped the financial rewards of my
knowledge.
I don't know how many times I heard someone working in the construction
business refer to a stair stringer as a horse. Words like these used to
drive me nuts, until I figured out that there were plenty of other words
used by other home building professionals, that I had never even heard
of before.
Make sure that you check out the rest of our stair glossary, just to see
if you can find some other words that contractors, architects and
engineers use to refer to different parts of the house.
