Line Of Travel - Staircase Design
The line of travel in a stairway represents the path of traffic as people walk up and down the stairs. In a Straight stairway, most people travel directly up or down, in a Straight line, like the picture below.
In other stairways, the line of travel will be to one
side or the other side, but still could be in the center, depending upon
the width and design of the stairs. It's not uncommon to have a circular
stairway with a line of travel, next to the hand railing.
The reason for this is simple, most people hold on to the handrail,
while they're walking up and down the stairs. After a few years, it
won't be hard to notice, exactly where the line of travel actually is on
any stairway.
All you need to do is look at the stair flooring, for wear and tear.
It's not uncommon to find a carpeted or wood covered stairway with a
high traffic pattern, worn into the flooring.
