Pitch Blocks - Wood Working And Stair Building

Pitch blocks have been used by stair builders for years. They can be used to create intersection points for handrail parts and provide you with the pitch of your stairway. The illustration below provides you with a perfect example of a pitch block, but I'm going to need to create some more illustrations or find some more photographs, to provide you with more details about their benefits and uses.

How Do I Make One?

You can make a pitch block out of scrap lumber or a piece of plywood. You're going to create a 90° triangle, where the bottom of the triangle will be the length of your tread and the other side of the right angle will be the length of your riser.

You could always use a framing square to mark both sides of your 90° triangle.

After you have made the correct marks, you need to create the hypotenuse or long side of the triangle. When you have everything marked out correctly, cut your pitch block and it's ready to use.
