Plastering - Interior Wall Finish

Plastering is a process used to finish interior and exterior walls. Some construction workers refer to plastering as a process for finishing a stucco wall, while others refer to plastering in both ways. The picture below shows an extremely good looking guy, plastering an interior wall.

In case you haven't figured it out, that's my head in the picture. I was applying a skim coat of drywall joint compound over a wall that was previously textured. I use this plastering technique to flatten out the wall, so that I can apply a new texture. This method can be used to create a new textured surface.

How Do You Plaster The Exterior Walls?

The process for plastering exterior walls is usually referred to as stucco. You apply building paper over the wall studs and then apply a metal lath that looks like chicken wire over the building paper.

After that you can apply your first coat of mortar, which is a mixture of sand, water and cement over the building paper and lath. After a few days (I usually wait seven days) you can apply the next coat of cement.

The second coat of stucco is known as the brown coat and will be used to flatten out the exterior walls. After this step has been completed, you can wait a few more days and apply your finish coat of stucco and you're done.
