Preacher - Woodworking Marking Jig

A stair building preacher is used to mark the outside of an open stair stringer. The picture below provides us with an excellent illustration of a preacher, but if you're not familiar with them, we're going to need to show you how to use one.

A preacher is used to mark the outside finished stair stringer covering for a open stairway. If you're going to use a 1 x 12, fasten it securely to the outside of the stairway, in the proper position.

Remember, this stair stringer covering is part of the finished stairway and should line up with the top of the risers and front of the stair treads. It will run parallel to the top of the stairway.

After you've positioned it correctly, you can place the preacher up against the front of the stair riser. The slot that was cut in the preacher goes over the top of the 1 x 12 stair stringer covering.

Hold it up against the riser, while using the outside of the preacher to mark the outside or finished corner of the stair stringer covering. This will provide you with the perfect mark to cut a 45° angle.

The 45° angle you cut in the stair stringer covering will be used to connect to your finished stair risers.
