Spiral Stairway - Design And Building
A spiral stairway usually makes a complete circle as you work your way from the top, to the bottom of the stairway and uses a center pole as its main structural support. The picture below provides you with an excellent example of a spiral stairway that was used on the exterior of a home.
How Do You Move Any Furniture Up Spiral Stairs?
That's a good question, but I really don't have a good answer, because
most of the time you can't. About the largest thing you can carry up a
spiral stairway is going to be a small box.
Every large object will need to go over the handrailing, if possible.
One time I visited a home that had a removable handrail, specifically
for the purpose of moving large objects up or down from the loft area.
Should I Install A Spiral Staircase?
Before you do, make sure that you understand and meet all of the
building code requirements. Some building codes only allow you to
install a spiral staircase up to a single room that is less than 400
square feet.
Be warned, some of the stairways are going to be difficult for large
people to navigate. If you're 6 feet or taller or wider than 24 inches,
you're not going to walk up and down the stairs as easy as someone who
is much smaller.
