Stair Builder - Construction And Remodeling

A stair builder is the person who actually builds the stairway. When I was working on construction crews that were building hundreds of homes, it was my job to build the stairway and it was another person's job to finish the stairway.

Framing Carpenter - Stair Builder

The framing carpenter's job is to layout, cut and build the rough stairway. This was the set of stairs that you would walk up and down and could be finished in lots of different ways.

Most of the stairways that I built as a framing carpenter, were carpeted and finished with elaborate wood handrails. As a rough stair builder, I rarely met or dealt with the finish carpenters.

Finish Carpenter - Stair Builder

The finish carpenters job was to install the handrailing, skirt boards, tread and riser ends, balusters, banisters and anything else that was required to complete the stairway, with the exception of painting or staining the parts.

It wasn't common for a finish carpenter to paint or apply any type of finish to the stairway parts that were installed by them. This would have been a job for the painter, but every once in awhile it would have been the finish carpenters responsibility, but this was rare.

I spent it least 10 years of my life building stairs for tract homes and would definitely consider myself to be a stair builder.
