Stair Protector - Runners And Vinyl Protection
A stair protector would be anything that would be protecting any part of your stairs. The most common stair protectors used today are carpet, pads and runners. These go over your stair steps and are designed to extend the life of your original stairway finish.
Vinyl Staircase Runners
These stair protectors usually have little tabs for carpeting, attached
to the bottom of the runner, to keep it from moving or to limit the
movement, while you're walking up and down the stairs. These tabs
wouldn't work as well on a wood floor.
If you're planning on ordering a stair runner or other protection, make
sure that you order the correct one. This would apply more to vinyl than
to carpeting, because most carpeting won't have tabs attached to the
bottom.
Vinyl stairway runners usually have some type of grooves to provide
traction for your feet, otherwise it would defeat the purpose. Could you
imagine covering a stairway in vinyl or plastic, creating a smooth
surface that would be slippery when wet?
What's The Biggest Problem With Stair Protection?
The biggest problem is movement, while you're using the stairs. It's not
just annoying, it could create a safety hazard. Make sure that your
runners or protectors are securely fastened to the staircase.
Stair protectors work great when installed properly and maintained. It
wouldn't be a bad idea to remove them every once in a while and clean
the areas that they're protecting.
