Tract Stairs - New House Construction

Tract stairs are usually referred to as stairs that are built for new home building tracts. For example if a home builder was building more than 10 homes at one time, this would be considered a housing tract. Each one of the stairs built in the housing tract would be considered tract stairs.

Mass Production And Tract Stairs

I don't remember what the largest housing tract I ever worked on, actually was, but I do remember working on one that had about 120 stairs. At the time, I had two other jobs going and couldn't work on one at a time, and would rotate my days between all three.

It would normally take me about two weeks to cut 120 stairs, but what happened next, caught me totally off guard. I went to work on Monday and started cutting the stairs, the next two days I spent at two different jobs and came back Thursday. There wasn't a big difference, the wall framers were going at a pretty good clip, but this was normal.

By the time I came back next week, they had the entire job framed out and were about halfway done with the floors. I hadn't even cut 1/5 of the tract stairs yet. I needed to hire some people and I needed to hire them fast.

To make a long story short, I hired two of the job site Foreman's sons and they help me finish the job, but I was so far behind, from the very beginning, that I never caught up. They were building the roofs, at the time we were building the stairs.

Mass production tract home framing at its maximum capacity, can be simply amazing. When you really get a crew that works together and knows what they're doing, they can really assemble a lot of product and assemble these homes fast.
