Porch Stairs

Most of the time these stairs are built correctly, but every once in a while I come across a set of porch stairs that has top or bottom riser problems. This usually happens when someone decides to pour a new sidewalk, leading to the porch, in the wrong location or when someone decides to install another layer over the existing porch.

If you're planning on building your stairs, for an exterior porch, make sure that the landscaping has been designed correctly. One time I even saw a sidewalk sloped in the wrong direction, creating a nice pool of water at the bottom of the stairs.

The front, back or side yard will need to be planned, before the stairway or stairways can be built.

If you're planning on using lights (like the picture above) in the risers, make sure that you have read and understand, the installation instructions. Sometimes these lights look great when their new, but within a few years, will need to be replaced.

One of the biggest problems I've noticed with lights located in risers has to do with people kicking them. Whether it was an accident or on purpose, these stair lights usually aren't located, in the best spots.

Well, that's the end of our free how to build stairs section of this website. Feel free to check out the rest of the website, if you're looking for more information on planning, designing or building a stairway.
