How Many Stair Treads or Steps Does The Average Stairway Have For Two-Story House?
The average stairway for a two-story house will have
13 steps and 14 risers. This is based off of an 8 foot tall
ceiling and
the use of 2 x 10 or 2 x 12 for floor joist.
However, today newer two-story homes are being built with nine and 10
foot ceilings. Stairways for buildings this tall would require 14 to 17
steps.
Don't forget to count any landings or floors in between the first and
second story as steps.
For example, the stairway in the picture above has a
step in the landing and would be counted as two individual steps. Any
change in vertical height around 90° should provide you with another
step.
