Indoor Non Slip Stair Treads

It doesn't take much to make an indoor stair tread, skid resistant. Most stairways that are located on the interior of the building, usually have some type of slip resistant material, but it isn't going to be the case, all the time.

Carpeting

Carpeting makes an excellent slip resistant stair tread, but don't confuse slip resistant with slip proof or preventing anyone from ever slipping and injuring themselves. I have personally slipped down a carpeted stairway, twice during my lifetime and it wasn't pleasant.

Try to avoid using high pile carpeting that's over an inch tall. Make sure that you don't install any carpeting that you could snag your shoes or feet on, either.

Tile

If you're looking for a good indoor non slip stair tread, tile might not be the choice, especially glazed ceramic tile. Try to avoid using smooth tiles and if possible, try to find one with a rough or coarse surface.

Even though we're talking about treads, you could use almost any type of tile for your stairway risers, just don't use them on areas where people are going to be stepping.

Wood

Smooth wood that has been sanded to a near polished finish, will not make a good non slip stair tread. If you're planning on installing wood steps for your stairway, plan on finding some type of way to cover them with a skid resistant material.

Focus On The Interior Stairway

Since the inside stairway is going to be used more than the exterior stairway, you should focus your attention on it, first. However, if you're exterior stairway is more slippery than the Interior stairway, you should consider focusing on both of them, at the same time.

I built this section of the website, to provide people with a little more knowledge about their stair treads, hoping that they will use some of the advice to protect their family and friends. Use this information wisely.
