Non-skid Surface

By now I've probably covered every non-skid stair tread you could possibly think of, but I haven't really mentioned much about non skid surfaces, especially for stair landings, decks, porches and walkways. The picture below should provide you with a pretty good idea, how to create a non-skid surface on a stair landing, even though it wasn't installed correctly.

Which Non Skid Products Should I Use For My Stair Landing?

I can't really answer that question, because I don't know what type of stairway you actually have, but I can recommend a few products that you can look into, to see if they actually fit your needs.

Epoxy Paints

They have some incredible paints that you can mix with epoxy-based materials, to create a slip resistant surface, but don't be confused, because when some of these slip resistant epoxy paints are wet, they can be extremely slippery.

Don't forget, that you can't simply paint an epoxy paint over a surface of something, to make it waterproof. Some of these products can provide you with a water resistant coating, but I wouldn't count on them, 100% to provide you with a waterproof coating, no matter what the manufacturer says.

Rubberized Coatings

Some of these products are simply fantastic, but I personally haven't tested them. You see them on boats, stairways and even around pool decks. If you're looking for a non slip skid resistant surface, make sure that you check out a few rubberized coating manufacturers, before making any final decisions.

Decorative Aggregates

This is another epoxy-based system that uses a wide variety of different minerals, including glass to produce a skid resistant surface. A friend of mine hired a contractor to install a decorative aggregate coating around his entire pool.

When it was finally finished, it really look nice. However, I would like to point out something that I've already mentioned, but you might need to hear it again. Don't confuse non skid surfaces with surfaces that aren't going to be slippery. Even this beautiful pool deck that my friend installed, was a little slippery, even when it wasn't wet.

By now you're probably wondering is there a non skid surface that will prevent anyone from slipping? There is, but is there a product that will prevent everyone from falling and injuring themselves? No, there isn't. Just plan on doing the best you can with your stair steps and landings, and hope for the best.
