Non-slip Stair Mats

Non slip stair mats come in a variety of different materials, designs and sizes. The one that you're looking at in the picture below is made of rubber. Rubber usually sticks well to almost any smooth surface and also provides people who are going to be using the stairway, with an excellent slip resistant stair step.

Be careful purchasing thick rubber stair mats that are going to create riser variations in your stairway. Some of these stair mats are over a half-inch thick and can increase or decrease stair riser heights, creating trip hazards and building code violations.

Outdoor Non Slip Stair Mats

Rubber or a stair tread coverings made with a rubber backing, usually works excellent on exterior stairs. Try to avoid wool, carpeting or any other materials, similar to them. If stair tread carpet pads are exposed to high temperatures, freezing weather or sunlight, they might not last very long.

I didn't bother mentioning snow, ice or rain, because if these carpeted stair tread mats are going to be sitting in moisture, for long periods of time, you could end up replacing them, within a short period of time.

If you are planning on using some type of stair tread carpet covers, just make sure that you remove them, during the winter or rainy months. Wet carpet covers could attract mold, mildew and fungus.

Indoor Non Slip Stair Mats

Even though a rubber backing would be perfect, you can use almost any type of non slip, skid resistant materials, on your interior stair steps. Since they aren't going to be exposed to extreme weather conditions, your only priority, will be to make sure that they are actually slip resistant.

Carpet Stair Mat Maintenance

It's easy to do, every single time you walk up and down the stairway, you should be conscious of any movement between the carpet mats and the stair treads. If they are moving enough to cause someone to lose their balance, they will need to be reattached and securely fastened.

Now you're probably wondering, what would be too much movement? Any movement is too much movement, just because you don't have problems walking up and down the stairway, doesn't mean that everyone else won't.
