Non-slip Wood Stairs

Non slip wood stairs are easy to build, even though I rarely see them built. Sometimes it's only going to take a little more time, but there won't need to be any additional building materials purchased. Non-slip wood stairs can be created by placing a few small grooves in each one of the wood steps.

How To Make Non Slip Wood Stairs Without Spending Any More Money

Even though I mentioned that you're not going to be spending any more money, I'm assuming that you already have a router and a small Straight router bit. Otherwise it is going to cost you a few bucks, but look at the bright side, when you're done you'll have a router.

All you need to do is router two or three, 1/4" grooves that are between a 1/4 of an inch and 3/8 of an inch deep and about 1 inch apart. These groups can be placed near the front edge of the wood stair tread.

These grooves will provide stairway users with a small rough surface and provide them with a little more traction than they would have had, if the wood stair treads were smooth.

How To Make Non-Slip Wood Stairs, Using Non Slip Tape

Even though this method might cost you a few dollars, it can be done during or after the stairway has been completed. The first thing you're going to need to do is purchase some high quality non slip tape.

After you've purchased the tape, measure the width of your stair treads. For example, if you measure the width of your stair treads and they're 40 inches wide, you can cut the non-skid tape in lengths of 36 inches.

There is no need for the tape to go all the way to the edge of the stairway, because most people walk up and down the center half of the stairs. After you've cut the tape, place it about a half inch from the front of the stair tread and then center it in between the stair stringers.
