Rustic Stair Treads

I don't know if the term rustic stair tread actually refers to something from the Old West or something that's just old. Well we're going to assume that a rustic stairway is something built out of materials that re-create an old stairway. So let's see if we can figure out how to put together some rustic stair treads and risers and create an old fashion stairway.

Old Rustic Stairway

Depending upon the design or style of the staircase that you're planning on building, will determine which type of stair treads and risers you're going to be using. If you're looking for an Old West look, you might need to find a lumber dealer, who has lumber that has been removed from old buildings.

Large Knots And Lumber Variations

If you're looking for a particular type of lumber or wood with a wide variety of knots or blemishes, you might need to cut your own tree down. Most of the lumber sold at lumber yards will be a premium grade. In other words, depending upon the type of look that you're actually trying to acquire, will determine the amount of effort needed, to find the right parts.

Sandblasting Your Staircase

Another way that can be used to create a certain style for rustic stair treads, would be to sandblast the stairway. This would definitely provide you with a rustic look and plenty of traction for the stairway steps.

Beating The Stair Treads With A Chain

This might sound strange, but you can also acquire a rustic stair tread, by grabbing a large chain and beating the heck out of your steps. Preferably, before they're attached to the stairway. This actually creates another rustic look. It could also provide you with an excellent workout, as long as you're careful and don't hit yourself with the chain or someone else.
