Cross Section - Stair Design Plans

Whenever someone refers to a cross-section, try to imagine taking a giant saw and cutting a section of the building in half. After that, you need to remove one of the sections of the house. If you were to view the house from the side that you just removed, you would be looking at the cross section.

Cross-sections are used by architects, engineers and home designers. They provide the home builders with detailed information about different sections of the house.

The picture above shows a cross-section of a Straight set of stairs. When I was building stairs, the cross-section would give me a good idea, what the stairway was going to look like when it was completed.

Remember, these are side views and there are different parts of the building blueprints that will provide you with additional information, like floor plans, engineering and details.

Cross-sections usually have reference marks to details that provide the builders with specific ways to attach different structural components, like stair stringers, floor joist and stair landings.
