Finial - Stair Handrailing

A finial is any decorative building materials, that would protrude in an upward direction off of a cabinet, post or other stair parts. In the picture below you will notice a round object that was placed on top of a wood post. This is an excellent example of a finial.

Like most stair building construction terms, a round object that is placed on top of a wood post could also be called a post cap. There are plenty of words in the building industry that relate to the same or similar building components.

Finials can also be made up of other materials and found on top of lamps, furniture and even flagpoles. It's not uncommon to find an eagle made from brass at the top of a flagpole, carrying a flag, representing the United States.
