Joist - House Framing

These are the horizontal structural support members of the floor system that hold up the floor sheathing. Floor joist are usually 2 x 6, 2 x 8, 2 x 10, 2 x 12 or 2 x 14 and can also be in the form of engineered lumber, like truss joist.

Most framers referred to a joist as a structural framing member that supports a floor or landing. They can also be refer to as structural roofing supports, but rarely are.

When building stairs, joist will be used in your landings, whether they're in the middle of your stairway or at the beginning or end.
