Wall Furring Strips - Home Building And Stairs

Wall furring strips can be made out of cardboard, plywood, oriented strand board and a variety of different materials. There used to straighten wall studs, floor joist and ceilings, before applying the wallboard.

Cardboard Wall Furring Strips

I've probably stapled on thousands of these cardboard wall furring strips, during my career as a framing carpenter and home builder. They're relatively inexpensive and can make all the difference in the world, when straightening wall studs.

The biggest problem with wood is that it bows, shrinks, twists and expands. If you have one wall framing stud with a crown (curve in one direction) going towards the back of the wall and the next wall stud with a crown, going towards the front of the wall, you're going to have a problem.

The cardboard wall furring strips can be used to fill in the areas that need to be filled. Any wall studs that are bowed out, can be planed down with a handheld planer.

The furring strips are used to add materials to the walls, if needed and the planer will be used to remove materials.
